A Devon council has launched a letting agents grading system similar to the ratings used to assess food hygiene in restaurants.
Agents who sign up to Teignbridge Council’s Property Agent Rating Scheme (PARS) are able to display their rating with window stickers and certificates as well as on their websites.
The scheme is designed to ensure all letting agents and property managers comply with letting related legislation and will make it easy for landlords and tenants “to easily identify who they can trust to look after their interests”.
Council officers will assess agents by visiting their workplaces, and checking their history and feedback online.
Agents will then be awarded one of four ratings, from platinum (the highest) to bronze.
The council said the importance of having a scheme like this one is backed by figures showing the private rented sector is now the second largest tenure in England.
In a statement, Teignbridge Council said: “Working with local landlords, landlord associations, letting agents, solicitors, and accountants, the scheme is a means of ensuring that all letting agents and property managers comply with letting related legislation.”
