Unemployed people in the UK will be forced to pick up litter, clean graffiti or serve food to the elderly or face losing their benefits, says chancellor George Osborne.

From April next year, anyone who has been on the dole for more than nine months will have to do work in the community to earn their state hand outs....

Nearly one in ten Britons have asked their doctor for sleeping pills, according to new research.

A study found technology is increasingly being blamed for causing sleepless nights for millions of people.

It has prompted 9% of adults to ask their GP for sleeping pills.

According to research by Potter’s Herbals, 44% of people say smart phones and tablet computers do hinder their ability to sleep at night....

More than a million UK workers on ‘Zero hour’ contracts

More than a million workers in the UK are on zero-hour contracts, giving them no guarantees of shifts or regular work patterns – four times official estimates, research suggests. 

The survey, by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, of 1,000 workers indicates that 3-4% of the employed in the UK were on such contracts....

Long-term unemployment at highest level since 1996

The number of people in long-term unemployment is at its highest level since 1996, according to new figures released by the Office for National Statistics.

The amount of people out of work for over a year has increased by 32,000 year-on-year to 915,000 – the highest rate in 17 years. While the number of people without work for more than two years now stands at more than 460,000 – the highest rate since 1997....
